A global network and crowdsourcing platform for researchers, educators, practitioners, policymakers, activists, and anyone interested in public participation and democratic innovations. Participedia has broken new ground in the online crowdsourcing of social scientific data while promoting best practices in participatory democratic innovations

Southampton Research Software Group

The University of Southampton’s Research Software Group are leaders in developing software with researchers and will assist us in developing an indicator-based monitoring software or dashboard for democratic innovations, while we work with policy makers to design this software in an agile manner, responding to policy and research needs.


Involve is the UK’s leading public participation charity, with interest in harnessing new digital technologies for successful public consultations and putting people at the heart of decision-making. With Involve, we will co-design and re-design deliberative interventions to maximise democratic outputs, using the most recent advances in quantitative methods, data science and artificial intelligence to ensure participatory and deliberative events are held with the utmost regard for fairness, equality and usefulness, ensuring that people’s voices are really heard.

The Southampton City Council’s Intelligence, Insight and Communications department has shown its commitment towards citizen participation with initiatives like the People’s Panel and Citizen Science, changing the way they engage with citizens, with the support of the University of Southampton. The City Council will help identify sites for deliberative events and facilitate access to policy makers, and overall help design and give feedback on these processes to reach the people of Southampton and gain insights into democratic innovations research.

The World Bank Digital Engagement Evaluation Team (DEET) will support us in the use of digital technologies for successful public consultations and democratic innovations. With their expertise, we will locate potential work cases in the global south and co-design deliberative events to understand the effects of these interventions in different parts of the world.

Web Science Institute

The Web Science Institute (WSI) co-ordinates Southampton’s interdisciplinary socio-technical expertise in Web Science, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI). With a clear focus on studying how the Web impacts on society and how society impacts the development of the Web, their work includes research collaborations with industry and academia, education through our Centres for Doctoral Training in Web Science Innovation and Human-Centred AI, providing online continuing professional development courses, enterprise and impact, and influencing public policy.


UK Research and Innovation

This project is primarily funded by a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship award to Dr Matt Ryan. Future Leaders and their teams benefit from a significant investment from UKRI and host universities as well as support from peers and through the Future Leaders Fellows Development Network.



Public Policy Southampton (PPS) is the University of Southampton's dedicated unit to help researchers connect with policymakers through fellowship programmes, capacity building and engagement activities to better support evidence-informed policymaking. PPS plays a key role in supporting the project inside and beyond the University of Southampton.


The University of Southampton (UoS) is a public research university and a founding member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities in the United Kingdom. The UoS is a co-funder of the project and has provided funding for research through several internal grants

Royal Society of Arts

The Participedia project is partly funded by a partnership grant by the Social Science and Humanities Reseach Council of Canada (SSHHRC). Dr. Ryan and Dr. Spada are collaborators on this large network which supports additional related work.

The Centre for Democratic Futures of the University of Southampton is a multi-disciplinary team of academics who have developed an international reputation for excellence in the related fields of democratic theory, democratic and non-democratic governance, democratic innovation, citizenship, political analysis, institutional design, public policy and the history of democracy. Centre for Democratic Futures


The Agents, Interaction and Complexity group (AIC) of the University of Southampton undertakes world‐leading research into the science and engineering of complex socio‐technical, socio‐economic and socio‐ecological systems that underpin the most pressing challenges currently facing society.  Problems as diverse as engineering resilient and sustainable smart infrastructure, or refactoring health‐care systems to cope with demographic change, or anticipating and mitigating the impacts of climate change, all involve building and analysing complex systems comprising many interacting agents, including people and other organisms, hardware robots and autonomous software agents.

Economic & Social Research Council

UKRI’s Economic & Social Research Council awarded the UoS a four-year ESRC Impact Acceleration Account to support a diverse range of knowledge exchange and engagement activities until 2028. The aim of the ESRC IAA is to maximise the practical application of Southampton’s social science research outputs. The Rebooting team has received significant support from this fund matched by Southampton City Council in order to deliver climate engagement in Southampton.

Research England

UKRI’s Research England is responsible for funding and engaging with English higher education providers, to create and sustain the conditions for a healthy and dynamic research and knowledge exchange system in the higher education sector.lication of Southampton’s social science research outputs. The Rebooting team has received support from Research England’s Participatory Research Fund to support development of local NGO focused on climate action.

The Royal Society of Arts (RSA) has been at the forefront of significant social impact for over 260 years. Their change process, rigorous research, innovative ideas platforms and unique global network of changemakers, work collectively to enable people, places and the planet to flourish. RSA funded projects are committed to inspiring better ways of thinking, acting and delivering change. An integral part of the RSA in creating a better future, champion new ideas, drive social change, deliver practical solutions. RSA are administering a UKRI fund for innovations in public dialogue. An award to Involve, our team and Nethood, has allowed a collaboration which implements learning from the Rebooting project in empowered privacy compliant dialogues.

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada

Rebooting Democracy benefits from synergies with Phoenix, a group of practitioners in Democratic Innovations (DI) that work together forging a common forward-looking spirit and a precise commitment to improve the quality of democracies. Through action, research, and experiments they have observed and supported many committed public authorities in building and consolidating participatory and deliberative practices.

We are a network of people and organisations working on issues of power, democracy and voice in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We are working to build a stronger democracy by connecting people and supporting collaboration, increasing knowledge, skills and resources, and coordinating effective influencing strategies and action.

The Integrated Care Board (ICB) is the statutory organisation responsible for setting the strategic plan for the NHS in Hampshire and Isle of Wight to deliver its part of the health and care strategy. It allocates NHS resources through our four places and our transformation programmes to make sure the right health services are being delivered to people across the area.

Phoenix


NetHood

NetHood is non-proit organisation based in Zurich. It aims to bridge the digital with the physical space by sharing ideas and experiences. It looks for solutions to current challenges in different areas such as the organic Internet, neighborhood catalysts, complementary currencies, cooperative housing, and sustainable food culture. NetHood's people are engaged in academia (ETH Zurich and ZHAW) and in practice, being active in organizing interdisciplinary events, writing scientific papers, reading, and giving talks in local and international forums.


Dr. Paolo Spada’s European Commission’s Horizon grant has enabled collaborations and learning across projects focused on delivering innovative dialogues on climate governance.

We are working with local climate action groups in Southampton City, funded by Research England Participatory Research. The Southampton Collective is a social enterprise working to progress collaborative projects in the city since 2016. Their work seeks to encourage creativity, sustainability, resilient communities, and inclusivity. Southampton Climate Action Network (SoCAN) is a coalition of all the groups involved in action and activities in Southampton that promote positive community-led responses to the climate emergency and a space for creating connections for a healthy sustainable city.
